Grants & costs
What the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is worth, who qualifies, how it reaches you, and why we will not put a headline price on a website.
What it is worth
England and Wales. Figures correct at the time of writing — the certified installer confirms current values and your eligibility when the application is made.

Air source heat pump where the property is off the mains gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG. Temporary uplift running until 31 March 2027.
Qualifying domestic installations are zero rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. No VAT is added on top of a qualifying quote.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is paid through an MCS certified installer, who applies for the voucher and takes the grant off your invoice before you pay. NorthStar designs the system and manages your job; the installation is carried out and MCS certified by our MCS registered installation partner, and it is their certification the grant is claimed against.
That means you get the grant deducted up front in the normal way. It also means eligibility is confirmed by the certified installer rather than by us, which is the only honest way to put it.
Tell us what heats the house now and whether you are on mains gas. That is all it takes.
Why no price list
Plenty of sites publish a headline price. The reason we do not is that the honest cost of a heat pump depends on things nobody can know from a postcode.
FAQs
Owner-occupiers, private landlords and some self-builds in England and Wales. It is not means tested and there is no income condition. The property must be replacing a fossil fuel or electric heating system rather than an existing heat pump.
No. The MCS certified installer applies for the voucher and the grant is taken off your invoice before you pay. You never handle the money.
The application is made by the MCS certified installer who registers your installation, which is our MCS registered installation partner. NorthStar designs the system and manages the job. We are telling you this plainly because the grant depends on that certification, not on ours.
The uplift applies to properties with no mains gas connection that are currently heated by oil or LPG. If you are on mains gas, it is £7,500. The higher rate runs until 31 March 2027.
The requirements have changed over the life of the scheme. Rather than quote a rule that may have moved again, the certified installer confirms the current conditions for your specific property as part of the application. Ofgem publishes the definitive guidance.
Qualifying domestic heat pump installations are zero rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, so the grant and the VAT relief both apply to an eligible job.
It varies far too much with property size, radiator work and cylinder requirements for a website figure to be worth anything. We survey, then quote in writing with the grant shown as a deduction so you can see both numbers.
You are under no obligation at any stage. Nobody is going to sit in your kitchen until you sign something.
Check where you stand
Two questions decide it: what heats the property now, and whether it is connected to mains gas. Tell us those and we will tell you which figure you are looking at.
